Classes and timings
Why a class and a timing are two different things, and how asatiza are assigned to them.
Two words in Sijil are easy to run together and are not the same thing. A class is a group of students — قاعدہ الف, حفظ دوم — with a name, a fee and a list of children in it. A shift is one of the times that class meets, with its own start, its own end and its own Ustaz.
The distinction matters because the register is a shift's, not a class's. A class that meets after Fajr and again after Asr is one class with two shifts, and it produces two registers a day, possibly for two different asatiza. This is why the dashboard counts aaj ki hazri in timings rather than in classes.
Creating a class
Classes → Nayi class, one screen with both halves on it, because a class with no shift has no register and would be invisible the moment you saved it.
Step 1
Class details
The name, boys or girls, its shoba and darja, the monthly fee, and a description if it helps somebody else recognise it.
Step 2
Shifts and teachers
At least one shift: a name (Morning), a start time, an end time, and the Ustaz who teaches it. Add as many as the class genuinely meets — drag to reorder them, or duplicate one and change its hours.
A shift may be left Unassigned for now. It will not appear on any Ustaz's screen until somebody is chosen.
Step 3
Save
Sijil refuses a few things here rather than accepting them quietly: two shifts with the same name in one class, an end time before its start, and two shifts whose hours overlap.
Afterwards the two halves separate. On the list, the class name opens its details; the Shifts button beside it, with the count on it, opens the timings. That split is deliberate: changing a fee and changing who teaches the 6 a.m. register are different jobs, done at different times, usually after different conversations.
Changing shifts later
The timings page is where an Ustaz is attached to, or detached from, a class. Assigning one is a two-word job — pick a name in the shift's teacher select and save.
Two rules govern edits to a shift that already exists, and both exist to protect registers that have already been marked:
- A timing change starts from tomorrow. Change the hours of a running shift and the page says so: This change takes effect from tomorrow. Past attendance is not affected at all. Sijil will not accept a timing change dated today, because today may already have a register against the old hours.
- Removing a shift stops it from tomorrow and keeps its past. "Morning" stops taking attendance from tomorrow. Past attendance stays on file.
Changing who teaches a shift is dated the same way, and the toast says exactly what it means: the assigned teacher can open the class from that date. Today's register still belongs to whoever was on it this morning.
Shobay and darjay
A shoba (شعبہ) groups classes that teach the same thing — Hifz, Nazira, Qaida, Aalim. A darja (درجہ) is a year or stage inside a shoba, and it is optional: Qaida ya Hifz jaisay kuch shobon ko darjay ki zaroorat nahi hoti. Both are managed together under Classes → Shobay, where you can also reorder them so the list reads in teaching order rather than alphabetically.
Four shobay — قاعدہ, ناظرہ, حفظ and عالم — are created for you when your madrasa is approved. Rename them, delete the ones you do not teach, add your own.
A shoba is more than a label, and this is the one thing worth understanding before you file a class under one: a shoba carries the progress track its classes inherit — the ordered list of units an Ustaz marks a student through, پارہ 1…30 or تختی 1…N. Sabaq progress is the whole story; the consequence here is that moving a class to another shoba can change what its children are recorded as memorising.
Sijil therefore treats the shoba on an existing class differently from every other field on the page. It has its own Badlein button rather than sitting in the Save payload, and it asks three things before it does anything:
- What actually happened — Filing ghalat thi (the class always belonged there and the old entry was a mistake, so no date is recorded) or Class waqai muntaqil hui (the children moved up, and the change is dated; a future date is refused).
- A reason, which is kept permanently.
- Your confirmation of a preview, which is the only place you are told how many children are already partway through a different track — because those children are not moved, and their progress stays exactly where it is.
A single class that does not fit its shoba does not need the taxonomy rebuilt around it. Is class ka track on the same page overrides the inherited track for that one class — a قاعدہ الف filed under ناظرہ, for instance. It saves the moment you change it, with no Save press, and the hint under it says so.
The monthly fee
The fee on a class is what a new student joining it will be given. Existing students keep paying what they pay.
That is not a limitation, it is the point: a family was told a number and a raise is a conversation, not a database update. When you change a class fee, Sijil recalculates what each current student would owe and hands you the list — open each profile to review and apply. You apply it per student, or you do not. Fees and receipts covers what the student side of that looks like.
Stopping a class, and starting it again
Every class carries one chip — Hazri chal rahi hai, Hazri band hai, or Kal se band — and one button, which offers the only action that makes sense in that state. A stopped class takes no attendance and does not appear on its Ustaz's screen at all.
Band karein asks for two things: from when, and why.
| Choice | What happens |
|---|---|
| Aaj se | Today's marked attendance is removed and today becomes a holiday for this class |
| Kal se | Today's register stays exactly as it is |
The reason is required, at least ten characters, and it is kept — the class list prints it under the name as Wajah: … so that in six weeks nobody has to remember why حفظ سوم went quiet. Starting a class again takes effect from tomorrow.
Either way you have until midnight to change your mind: Aaj raat 12 baje tak wapas kiya ja sakta hai. After that, do it the other way round instead. If several classes are off — after a holiday, say — Sab shuru karein restarts them together.
Deleting a class
Delete lives at the bottom of the class's own edit page, under Danger zone, and nowhere else. Not on the list, where a mis-tap is one pixel away from the shifts button.
What it does: Its students will be left without a class, but past attendance is kept. Those students are still enrolled, still in your madrasa, and now sitting in the dashboard's Students jinki class nahi band waiting to be given one.
